McGowan Government Commits to Upgrade Fremantle College Recreation Centre

A re-elected McGowan Labor Government will deliver $360,000 to air-condition and refurbish the Fremantle College recreation centre.

The Recreation Centre is home to the College’s Physical Education programs and is used by all enrolled students as well as a wide range of community groups and organisations.

This commitment will enable the school to install an evaporative cooling system for the gym and weights room, ensuring the centre can be comfortably used by students and the community for years to come.

The funding will also deliver cladding of interior walls to better protect existing insulation, floor restoration works, and installation of secure storage and shelving for sports equipment.

“Since opening in 2017, Freo College has gone from strength to strength, attracting strong enrolments from a diverse range of families across Fremantle,” said State Member for Fremantle Simone McGurk.

“This much needed upgrade will create local jobs, and give this outstanding school the modern, comfortable facilities its staff and students deserve.”

Board Chair at Fremantle College Frank Mofflin said, “Freo College is a new school that has been doing its best with an aging rec centre.

“Without this commitment, our students would be facing another uncomfortable summer in the gym.

“The entire school community will benefit from the fresh, comfortable and well-equipped facilities this funding will deliver.”

Christina Plaistowe, a parent at Fremantle College said this was great news for the school.

“I know my kids can’t wait to start using the refurbished gym.”
