More ferry services to boost summer visits to Rottnest Island

Rottnest Island is now more accessible with SeaLink launching a new passenger ferry service which will help put downward pressure on ferry tickets.

Visitors will have more travel choices than ever before with two extra ferry services operating from Fremantle Port, and one additional service from Hillarys Boat Harbour.

Premier Mark McGowan and Tourism Minister Paul Papalia today welcomed the extra ferry service as they set sail on SeaLink’s inaugural ferry service from Fremantle.

The Quokka 1 Ferry embarked on its maiden voyage to Rottnest Island with its first 300 passengers.

SeaLink’s passenger ferry schedule includes six services per day, complementing the existing schedules from established Rottnest Island ferry operators Rottnest Express and Rottnest Fast Ferries.

Improved access to Rottnest Island in time for the busy summer period is a major boost, with the additional services expected to build on the 645,000 visitors to the island last year.

“Unique Western Australian holiday destinations, such as Rottnest Island, add to the State’s vibrancy and help attract visitors, which provides an important boost to the economy,” said Premier Mark McGowan.

“With about 700,000 extra seats now available per year, the opportunity to visit Rottnest Island is greater than ever.

Tourism Minister Paul Papalia said it’s vital we maximise accessibility and affordability for families and tourists who wish to enjoy a holiday on the island.

“Rottnest Island is a State treasure, and something to be enjoyed frequently by tourists and Western Australians alike.

“All of the recent affordability initiatives are aimed at ensuring Rottnest Island remains the perfect summer getaway for hardworking WA families and visitors to this great State.”

Member for Fremantle, Simone McGurk, whose electorate includes Rottnest Island, said that more services will increase competition, drive down fares and draw more people to Rottnest, more often.

“We are so lucky to have Rottnest right on our doorstep, but for many local families getting over to Rottnest is just too expensive.

“More regular services, more competition and more choice can only be a good thing for the island’s visitors, businesses and workers alike.”
