WA in the red for the first time in 15 years
Colin Barnett has plunged WA into its first budget deficit in 15 years and the biggest deficit in the State’s history, State Member for Fremantle Simone McGurk said today.
The Barnett Government’s Mid-Year Review confirms the inevitable result of years of reckless financial management.
Ms McGurk said the $30 billion Barnett debt will impact on the lives of all Western Australians and threatens to burden the State and its people for decades to come.
“Colin Barnett has done what no other WA Premier has done in 15 years – plunge WA into huge deficit,” Ms McGurk said.
“Mr Barnett is like the bloke who won Lotto and still went broke.
“He inherited the best set of books in history from Labor only to blow the books just six years later.”
Ms McGurk said this has not arisen as a result of falling iron ore prices or the GST.
“This has happened because of Mr Barnett’s failure to create a financial plan across the forward estimates that would get the budget back under control,” she said.
“WA continues to generate record revenue, it’s this Government’s out of control spending that brought the budget into the red.”
